Halton 5 – Victoria Park, Widnes

Just outside Widnes town centre, Victoria Park offers a place to relax, exercise or simply enjoy the trees, flowers and walks.

I entered the park from the Kingsway Road and passed the fountain pictured above which, for once was working.

Above is my image of another fountain at the far end of the park,

That second lake and fountain are home to many swans, ducks and geese.

There is also a nice woodland walk where you are likely to see squirrels and wild birds.

I made my way to the glasshouse which has recently re-opened the butterfly-house as a section inside.

Earlier in the year there were some Pentecost Doves exhibited.

In August 2022, the time of my latest visit, the Butterfly house was open to visitors.

The butterflies were magnificent, but there were too many types to include them all here.

As I left, I walked to see the flowerbeds, such as that in front of the war memorial.

I took a moment though to photograph the display in front of the glasshouse.

Before I left the park, I stopped to photograph the bandstand.

My name is Gerald Murphy. I am a retired local government officer. At the time of my retirement I was an IT manager and had associated responsibilities for training. I had previously been involved, in various organisations, with aspects of industrial training and management development. My main hobby is photography and, until 2016, hillwalking in Snowdonia. Sciatica has put an end to mountain walks and, as a carer for my wife, opportunities for photography excursions are now more limited. Since July 2022, I have started using this site as a photobook.

    1. Thank you for your kind comment, Claire. Driving into Widnes from St Helens or Cronton down Kingsway, turn left immediately after the lights when you pass Widnes railway station. The glass house is at the far end and, at the moment, the Butterfly House is open Wednesdays and, I think, Saturdays between 11 and 2 pm. It’s a lovely park.
