Only a couple of days now before the big day, but there’s still time to look at how the cities and shops are tempting us through their light displays to get us in the mood. The photograph above is of the entrance to the Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool, though I actually took it on my way out, an hour or so after I first entered. This is the view of the entrance and the roadway down to the dock as seen from Liverpool One, that is, from the far side of the main East-West street known as Wapping.
As I suggested above, I began my tour of Christmas lights at the Royal Albert Dock. The inner dock’s columns were still festooned with the lights from the River of Light, so I just took a single shot and walked on.
I took a liking to this view of the bridge over the canal that runs between the Albert Dock and the Salthouse Dock – and, even though there are no Christmas lights in sight, I pressed the shutter.
I think that you’ll agree that this looks quite Christmassy and, as an image of a Liver Bird it’s just the job for this location.
I know that you’ve already seen this Liver Bird once, but, after passing it the first time, I’d wandered across to the M&S Arena to see if there was anything festive there before returning to head for Liverpool One – and then passed this different viewpoint on the way out. As you can see, the night is getting darker.
I had to pass the Albert Dock again on the way out and, because night had now fallen, the lights inside the Dock looked a lot more festive with the reflections in the water.
Walking alongside Canning Dock, nearing the exit to Wapping, I took this image which is quite close to my favourite viewpoint. There is a Christmas tree on the far side of the dock, so I’ll claim that as justification.
If you think that you’ve seen this scene before, you’re right. I did take a shot from this position – only a couple of yards from the previous viewpoint – when I was photographing the River of Light only days beforehand. Nevertheless, as I said then, this is one of my favourite city scenes, so I took the image above as I returned from the Albert Dock to its entrance on to Wapping..
Well, today’s photo is where I came in and went out. Leaving, I crossed the road into Liverpool One and that’s where most of my recordings of the 2021 Christmas lights were photographed. Let the party begin. I can barely wait for tomorrow.
