Scotland Revisited #3

Our first day after booking in to our hotel in Newton Stewart was to visit Wigtown, South of there.

Wigtown’s claim to fame is as Scotland’s National Book Town with a large number of second-hand bookshops. A National Book Festival has been held there since 1999. I understand that the population is less than 1,000 residents.

As the shop sign says, it is a bookshop, but look at the artwork outside to proclaim its importance.

This brightly coloured cycle was parked just outside the bookshop depicted in the image above it.

The town’s Information Centre – notice how dull the weather was that day. I could have brightened it up in Lightroom, but the result would have told a lie.

A resident clearly wanted to brighten up the town in their own way. Effective isn’t it?

A bookshop-cum-café

A terrace of old houses just off the main street. I believe that the word Vennel, shown on the street nameplate, is a Scottish word to denote a narrow passage.

The old church and graveyard were of particular interest to my wife and myself. One of the main reasons for our visit to this area were to pursue her genealogical research into her Hannay family ancestry. At least one of them was probably buried in this churchyard – though many of the epitaphs had been rendered illegible by age and weathering.

The residents of the cottage above clearly have their own way of brightening up the town.
